In it, during the summer of 1593, William Shakespeare and his troop of actors traveled to Wendel's Mound in the English countryside. There, they performed the new play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, for Lord Morpheus and his guests, Titania and Auberon, king and queen of the fairies, and their court.
Shakespeare wrote the play to Dream's instructions to ensure that humans never forgot Faerie and its rulers, Lord Auberon and Lady Titania. It is implied that Titania might have had an affair with Dream, who was called "Lord Shaper" by the faeries. Titania was shown to be incredibly narcissistic, and she was noticeably annoyed when Dream sent no secret message for her with a servant who returned to Faerie from his realm.
Titania was a recurring character throughout the series.
She was an important support character in Gaiman's series, The Books of Magic.
In the mythology of the comic series, she is a mortal woman, who has lived and ruled in fairy land so long that no one remembers she once looked - and still is, under her magical seeming - human.
Sandman Dream Country: A Midsummer Night's Dream won the World Fantasy Award in the 'Best Short Fiction' category. It is the first and only comic to ever have done so.
