This article is about the character from the comic series. For the character from the Netflix adaptation, see Mad Hettie.

Mad Hettie first appears in Preludes and Nocturnes. She lives as a tramp in London, and is known to John Constantine. In Dream a Little Dream of Me, she claims to be 280 years old, a claim Constantine knows to be true; she was born in 1741. She was said to have hidden her heart from Death.

History[]

According to Hob Gadling's recollection, Mad Hettie has been living on Old Compton Street in London since at least around 1770.[1]

When Dream escaped from his imprisonment, Mad Hettie knew about it and sought to relay this information to John Constantine, but he dismissed her story about "the Sandman" as a children's fairy tale.[2]

Personality[]

In Death: The High Cost of Living, she is shown to be rude, miserly, and constantly complains about the stupidity of present-day youth.

Abilities[]

She has been accused of being a witch, and also appears to have abilities as a haruspex; in explanation, however, she merely states that "you don't get to your two hundred and fiftieth birthday without learning a few tricks".

Other appearances[]

Hettie also appeared in the series The Dreaming, in which it was discovered that she had dealings with Destiny, Johanna Constantine, and President Thomas Jefferson.

Hettie also appears in Overture, where several things are revealed about her younger days, including the fact that when she was young she came into possession of a powerful artifact belonging to Time.
