Goldie is Abel 's pet gargoyle. The egg from which Goldie hatched had been a gift from Abel's brother, Cain, in Preludes and Nocturnes. Goldie lives with Abel in the House of Secrets.
History[]
When Goldie hatched, Abel thought to name it Irving; however, Cain violently insisted that gargoyle names must begin with a G such as Gazpacho, Gormagon, Gladstone, or Ganymede. Cain then murdered Abel over the squabble. When Abel revived, he prudently named the gargoyle Goldie, although he said that it would always be Irving in his heart.[1]
Gregory, who is Cain's gargoyle, often helps Goldie put Abel back together after he is killed.

- Goldie was initially male in the original Sandman comics, but was a female for the 1995 spin-off series The Dreaming.
- Goldie is named after an imaginary friend to whom Abel told his original stories in House of Secrets.
